Start with the plants and the space

A visually pleasant light does not tell you how much light each plant receives. The top and bottom of a wall, recessed foliage and plants near a window may experience different conditions. Specify the plant species, planted dimensions and available daylight.

For an existing wall, include overall photographs and close-ups of problem areas. Poor growth also calls for a review of watering, nutrition, temperature and maintenance. Increasing lamp power is not an automatic solution.

Coordinate with the other trades

Office and reception projects often involve a landscape designer, architect or interior fit-out contractor, electrical installer and maintenance team. Account for mounting points, cable routes, ceiling height, circulation, workstations and maintenance access.

Track spotlights allow different aiming options to be considered. Recessed fittings introduce specific mounting and access constraints. Linear lights depend on the geometry of the planted area. Choose the product family as part of the overall project: wattage or distance alone is not enough.

Use our living wall lighting guide to prepare these decisions.

What to include in your enquiry

  • Your business and role: design, supply, installation or maintenance.
  • A dimensioned drawing, wall width and height, and approximate foliage depth.
  • Photos of the space, windows and available mounting surfaces.
  • Existing or proposed plants.
  • Operating hours, closure periods and control options.
  • Watering conditions, maintenance access and integration constraints.
  • Project schedule, delivery location and indicative budget, if known.

You can start with an incomplete brief. Clearly identify what still needs to be decided so assumptions remain distinct from confirmed requirements.

Compare proposals on a clear basis

Ask for fitting references and quantities, positions, accessories and control principles. If measurements or a simulation are proposed, specify the units, conditions and contribution of daylight.

Agree who is responsible for supply, installation, adjustment, acceptance and maintenance. The documents and services included in your client’s project must be agreed for that project.

Offices and commercial buildings

Our office living wall project specification helps structure discussions with the client, covering layout, occupant comfort, controls and acceptance.

What about a living wall at home?

The same preparation applies to a house or apartment: dimensions, daylight, plants, available mounting distance and visual requirements. Homeowners can contact us directly or work through their landscape designer.
