A living wall needs light suited to its plants and location. Landscape professionals, designers and homeowners can prepare a project using wall dimensions, foliage depth, daylight and available mounting points.
Dimensions, photographs, plants and site constraints
Living plants use light for photosynthesis. Preserved and artificial displays do not need growth lighting; their decorative lighting should follow the supplier’s instructions. This distinction sets the purpose of your installation.
Examine the upper, middle and lower wall, foliage depth and shadows between plants. Electrical power alone does not describe the light received. Species, distribution, lighting duration and daylight must be considered together. Daylight varies with windows, obstructions and the seasons.
Track lights, surface-mounted spots, recessed fixtures or bars: selection depends on the site and exact products. Check the support, setback, aiming, cable routes, moisture and maintenance access. Recessed mounting must be specified in the instructions. There is no distance or watts-per-square-metre value suitable for every wall.
Provide a dimensioned plan, photographs, intended plants, ceiling height and mounting options. For commercial projects, add occupancy hours, visual expectations, irrigation details and installation and maintenance responsibilities. The services and documents to be supplied need to be agreed for your project.

Duration depends on the plants and daylight. A schedule helps document operating hours and review them with the seasons; continuous operation is not a general design rule.
Multiply the actual power in kilowatts by operating hours and the number of days. This gives kWh; multiply by your electricity tariff to estimate the cost.
Light is part of the project alongside species, watering, nutrition, temperature and maintenance. A problem deserves diagnosis before lighting is increased.
